Early Blooming Case in Point: Trout Lily

In January, a PLoS ONE article announced the earliest flowering times in recorded history happened in 2010 and 2012 for dozens of spring-flowering species in Wisconsin and Massachussetts. Radically early blooming is happening in NC, too, in a species that did not show up on the study’s list, but probably could be listed if someone did the same study down here: Trout lilies (Erythronium umbilicatum) were blooming at Occoneechee Mountain Natural Area on February 9th.

What early blooms have you seen in your area? Let us know in the comments.
