Why Giant African snail sex is a problem

Giant_snail_AfricaGiant land snails were listed in the top 15 invasive pests in the United States by the USDA. They are a problem in Florida in particular, where the baseball-sized molluscs can eat 500 different crops and, when those aren’t available, the sides of houses. Because they are hermaphroditic–a single individual can have both male and female parts–they reproduce prolifically, laying up to 1817 eggs per year.
